The Theme
Does advertising have to be mere type on a page or can it be more abstract and beautiful and give more meaning? this is going to be a conference where people experiment and are inspired by getting away from the busyness and clutter into the wide open space and quiet of nature. This idea was informed by our logotype which has a more digital, man made side and a more organic, natural looking side.
Digital Video
The animation is constructed in a stop-motion fashion further emphasizing the analog development and nature of the conference. Although highly persuasive in nature, it also plays a poetic role. It is to be used as advertising on websites, blogs, and emails. We have created cut down versions of the animation for use in speaker introductions.Printed Poster and Journal
The poster is a small 11 x 17 keepsake and will be printed for the conference only. All the other printed matter comes into one book which doubles as a journal for note taking and sketches. With just two pieces of print, printed matter is kept to a minimum.

thanks for the comment earlier tom, it makes me feel better about what I am getting out of this school. I definitely think this typelab conference has some good pieces to it. I agree that the large poster can do without the excess of the paragraphs. Then you will have a poetic and persuasive artifact that is separate from your very interactive book. The book is so personal and full of content while the poster will be so beautiful and memorable that your participants would more likely keep these items than discard them. I especially think the book if nothing else would be held on to because it's a small time capsule of information.
ReplyDeleteTypelab looks very polished and reflects the theme of type experimentation very well. Your logo type having this look of mechanical meets natural, along with the word 'lab' in a liquid container gives off a slight Jekyll & Hyde feel. Only in your poster and motion pieces where you can see the electric parts fusing into the leaves is where your campaign expresses a sense of convergence... instead of your black logotype where they seem a bit contrasting and give a feeling of technology can't harmoniously work with organic mechanical nature.
ReplyDeleteYour motion pieces are quite sensational, the anticipation and 'aha moment' is present when the letter forms slowly start to come together. The poster seems a bit sterile with those stark columns of copy and that hospital scrubs blue color on the plain white background; I would like to see more of the imagery you've used in your journal. Luke and I's teachers in colorado always told us "never make your logo your headline," So i think the piece can be even more sensational than it already is by less stark white backgrounds and use more imagery of the different ways you can use the experiments that attendees would see and make at this conference. Your journal is an excellent idea and is a nice amalgamation of information and interaction. The blue color used more graciously in this piece seems more comfortable and flows with your theme more appropriately.
I think your conference is one of the strongest out of the group, its very consistent in tone, continuity of theme, and clarity. There is a nice overall quality to your copy, imagery, and identity. I think for having such a broad theme of typographic experimentation, as a potential attendee I would like to see a little more of the variety or specificity of typographic experiments that would be at Typelab other than just the same logo being the prominent element on every piece. But the same could be said for Lance and I's work too, so good job and I enjoyed seeing Typelab... where can I register?
I really like what you and Luke have done with the poster. This was the artifact that stood out to me personally. I think the man made objects transitioning to the organic plants is very interesting and helps speak to the title regarding a lab. Chemistry comes to mind for some reason. However I agree with what was said during your presentation about the amount of text that was included. I think there could be a little less information.
ReplyDeleteI also really enjoy how you used the process of creating the poster, and turned it into a very nice motion piece.
I have to say, I really enjoyed your guys' work. If I saw this, I would immediately be attracted to it, and it would be something I would want to attend. So far, the your finished artifacts are quite clean, and I think utilizing your awesome analog logotype was a great path to go. Within the logotype alone, I automatically see a direct connection from your combined type experiments. You guys went through a lot of process trying to find the balance, once again, of legibility and uniqueness. And the digital renditions of your logotype were great, but I think this analog version is much more sensational and speaks more. For your poster, I really like that it's showcased nicely. I think some of the pieces could be signifiers and help direct information rather than having it underneath.
ReplyDeleteThe motion piece was a great artifact to include! I really enjoyed it because it not only showed the process of how this logotype was made, but was also just entertaining because you gave life to these inanimate objects through stop-motion. I agree with some of the other students in that some of the opening for speakers could be varied and possibly a little shorter. It might be interesting to do an accelerated version of your stop-motion piece along with this real-time version.
The book was a great way to combine all extra pieces of printed material into one form. I really like that the user won't have to carry all sorts of papers and folders and booklets and that it is just combined within one artifact. The book was very tight and clean, which I think helps see the consistency throughout your artifacts. I'm not a huge fan of the cover if I remember correctly. haha. Other than some small things, again NICE WORK! These are definitely strong pieces for the both of you.
