  1. I like your first idea of the air hockey table a great deal. I think the volley back and forth of the puck relates to the volley of a conversation very clearly. the back side of this poster is clever as well, show how the players can improve their communication skills for next time. I was wondering if the actual application or artifact of this could be something else? I think the poster as Jamie said is very one dimensional for such a clever interpretation. Air hockey is a game so maybe going along the lines of Amanda's proposal and making an actual game out of it, or maybe a gimmick like a retail sales catalog showing that you could buy different paddles or pucks to help the player, and making a chart of how well each item will boost your game.

Your second idea is my favorite like everyone else. I think you mentioned that page 5 of your presentation was going to be an animation of some sort, showing the action and process. I like it, but I agree with the group and think it will work better as an accompanying artifact to the paper airplane. The paper airplane is wonderfully tactile. As us designers being the audience, we love the craft and participation of design, so this would work really well and be fun to see in action.

I think your 3rd idea is sort of just a different application of the foundation of your first. I do enjoy the differentiation in communication by showing different slang and jargon through cultures. I think all 3 are great ideas, but the artifacts and actual application could be different and more effective if not in a poster form.

    But all-in-all, definitely proposal #2!

  2. Tom,
    Lovely drawings.
I believe all three ideas would meet two of the objectives of the visually engaging and documentation of the communication model. Adding cohesive annotations of the postcard dialogue may be the challenge.

Visualizing air hockey as a conversation is interesting to me. I enjoy the comparison of a fast moving puck to a fleeting message; noise could occurring during the ricochet of the puck, the steady hum of the pumping air, pinched fingers and even an accidental puck launch—the latter could equate a complete misunderstanding of the conversation.

Of course your paper plane idea is amazing. If you were to say stop by a park or even a coffee house with a collection of send a message paper airplanes, I have a feeling you would find many willing participants. The exciting part and good comparison to an actual fragile message is the lack of control (or noise) that could occur during the transmission.
A fun (possibly off the wall) example for a miscommunication, would be if one shy and love-struck person wrote a note expressing adoration to a stranger (a love at first sight type of situation) and the message was intercepted by another.

In my opinion, the intercultural communication model would be the most challenging. If you were to bring together two strangers (or more) from very different backgrounds and sit in the background with a tape recorder and note pad to witness and document the conversation. Guiding the conversation with a list of topics may be necessary.

  3. I feel that the first and second ones are the strongest and most easily connect to the average user on a level of fun and entertainment. The second one however has the potential to become something bigger than the product itself. It has the potential to create real world examples of the diagram itself. The action of using the the paper airplane itself is the user actually engaging in the diagram. once implemented this could be reproduced by simply photocopying the original. The spreadability that the product has is higher than the other two because you can use it up and it is ment for that. If the product is always being used and reproduced than the idea of it will permeate much deeper into society and not simply be filed away like the other two are in danger of.
